Review: 2012 Komatsu GD655-5 Grader
Komatsu GD655-5 Grader: The Introduction
Road graders are essential equipment that we should never take for granted. They are our best option when it comes to demanding highway building and road construction works. On the market today, you could even find a long lineup of manufacturers that offer these graders. Though perhaps the leading one that is continuously offering high performance models is the Komatsu. This brand is well-known here in the industry for their heavy motor grader machines that are equipped with top notch features and the latest technology, which completely satisfy their customers.
Now, if you’re also in the business of construction and is looking for a good road grader to include in your project, keep reading our article so you would know about the most sought-after model in the Komatsu range: the GD655-5. Let’s see why it has become the ideal choice of many contractors and operators.
Komatsu GD655-5 Grader: Key Features
It wasn’t so long ago when we encountered a used Komatsu GD655-5 Grader, and based on our test, I can say that this equipment is a true performer. Technically, inside it is a Komatsu SAA6D107-1, which is an air-to-air after cooled diesel engine that comes complete with a hydraulic driven cooling fan with a superb cleaning functionality. The motor also integrates an electric throttle control along with Economy and Power mode selections. These, then, deliver fast responses to match the grader’s excellent productivity and tractor effort.
Apart from its powerful yet low emission engine, the GD655-5 boasts its outstanding blade as well. Measuring 4320mm in length and 645mm in height, this large blade angle allows the materials to roll more freely along it. Therefore, reducing power requirements and enhancing operator productivity. This capability indeed makes the Komatsu machinery suitable for clay, dry soil, ice, or snow removal.
Also standard in the GD655-5 are a circle slip clutch and the blade lift accumulators. These accumulators, particularly, absorb the shocks when the moldboards come in contact with immovable objects. This is very ideal for rough grading applications in mining sites or rocky areas.
Upon testing, one of the most noteworthy feature of the GD655-5 in terms of design is its excellent visibility. The low profile vehicle has a huge hexangular cabin with a rear layout side pillar and front Y shape pillar, giving the operator a great view of the materials and the road ahead. It gets a well-positioned blade linkage, too, which also provides good visibility for the front tyres and the moldboard.
Inside the cabin, meanwhile, are outstanding specs that promote comfort and convenience. There is a reclining and air-suspension seat, an air conditioning system complete with a touch pad control, an electronic monitoring system, and an adjustable control console.
Other standard features
Impressively, the great things about this Komatsu grader don’t just end there. Aside from the ones that I’ve already mentioned, this model also has flood lights, vandalism protection, rear brake and tail lights, and the innovative Komatsu Machine Tracking System (KOMTRAX).

Komatsu GD655-5 Grader: The Verdict
With all these excellent features and capabilities, there’s no wonder why the Komatsu GD655-5 has become the top choice of many contractors here in Australia. The equipment that we have tested may be a used model, but still, it can perform at a top level. Personally, what I loved most about it is its heavy duty engine that helps the grader accomplish all the arduous applications with ease. I also liked the vehicle’s hexangular Y pillar cabin, which offers a class-leading visibility. No doubt, this Komatsu masterpiece is a practical addition to your road building project. I find it suitable for mining sites and for rocky areas.
