Volvo Construction Equipment has recently unveiled their new PL4809E rotating pipelayer. It basically boasts of superior performance capabilities with its excavator-based design. It offers safety-enhancing features, as well as an advanced Load Management System and CareTrack telematics.
Volvo equipped the PL4809E with the latest D13J Tier IV Final engine that delivers unparalleled lifting capacity. According to the company, it can even outperform the largest traditional side booms in its class size. Because of its 242,000 lbs. (109,769 kg) tipping capacity, it can easily accomplish heavy duty tasks. These would include tie-ins, feeding pipe-bending machines, and loading and offloading. In addition to that, the design of the PL4809E promotes stability and smooth hydraulics. These will allow it to work safely on slopes and across rugged terrain. In essence, it is ideal for lowering-in applications.
“The PL4809E is not only the most efficient and productive pipelayer introduced by Volvo to date, but it offers a number of unique advantages over traditional sideboom pipelayers, including additional versatility,” said John Duff, product manager, oil and gas pipeline construction at Volvo Construction Equipment.
Another interesting feature is that you can convert the PL4809E into a standard excavator in as little as 4.5 hours. You can do so by simply switching the pipelayer boom for an excavator alternative. There will be no loss of power in either configurations with the matching of hydraulics for both the digging and pipelaying applications.
Furthermore, you can easily transport the Volvo PL4809E around job sites with the use of a trailer or even a lowboy. There would be no need to disassemble both the counterweight and the boom in order to transport it. There is also the pre-prepared booms that allow simple and quick installation of the optional boom extension. This extension basically offers the same lifting capacity. But more than that, it improves versatility for an enhanced reach as well as hook height.
Volvo provides customisable support agreements (CSAs) along with advanced telematics. This creates a strong relationship between the customer and the dealer, as well as a full optimization of the fleet.
